Thinking about time...

Two months until Gettysburg. If I plan a month a dress, that's two dresses. I want three.

Obviously, I need to work. I don't need a month for an 1860s dress.

But I currently have a cold. I wish there was a cold shot like a flu shot. I was very happy with my flu shot last year...

Hmph.

There's so much weird pinning on the checked bodice that it's a little daunting to work on.

Or I'm just lazy...

Done!

I finished my cross-stitching project last night.

Windswept Santa

It probably has more detail stitching and outlining than any other picture I've made in the last 25 years. And so many French knots. So many. I'm not crazy about French knots, but at least I don't hate them I like I used to. This is the first cross-stitching piece that calls for lazy daisies as part of the details too.

This project went really, really fast. I've had a fair bit of free time lately.

Since I still have a week before I'll have access to a sewing machine, I'll keep working on Christmas ornaments for the children. This year they're very shiny.

Futzy stuff

Last night out of nowhere I tried the checked bodice on and pinned the hems and neckline and fronts. I hate that part. I think (I keep saying I think) I'm happy with it. The front basque folds a bit at the waistline, but I'm fine with that. I have to take in the back basque a bit. It's a little too full.

One of my favorite things about hand sewing is that seams are finished securely and don't pop doing things like this. So of course side seam popped. Oops :)

An idea

I really hate making back closing bodices. When I was marking the darts on the current dress, I realized I could make the storm cloud fancy dress a little later 1860s and do a front closing bodice, like the fuschia dress and slightly later spotty evening dress. And that works well for an overskirt too. That sounds so much less daunting.

I reeeeaaaaallly need to get going with all this...

So...

Instead of the darts, I entered grades for five hours last night. Oy.

Tonight's goal? Don't pass out before bedtime...

Two darts!

I sewed two darts yesterday, so two more today, I hope.

Slowly, it'll get started, then hopefully I'll be myself and quickly get it done!

Tonight's goal...

Sew one dart. That's not the least bit daunting!

Except, I really just want to drink lattes and do nothing...

Also, note goals tag. I figured it'd be easier to find posts about a dress if every other post wasn't I'm going to thread a needle!

Another Week of Cross-Stitching

I know these posts are boring, but I do like to post every week. Since this is what I'm doing, this is what you get to read.

Here was the state of the picture last week:
Windswept Santa-week 5

Here it is this week:
Windswept Santa - week 6

I finished the cross-stitches and half cross-stitches yesterday and did a fair bit of the backstitching and French knots and the like that the instructions call "details" and I call "outlining." There's a lot left on the outlining, but I'm pleased with how it looks so far. It's amazing how much better it looks with the edges outlined.

Beside cross-stitching, I've been working on Hallowe'en costumes for the children. Since I'm just at the cutting stage, there's nothing to show. I also started a Christmas ornament for one of the girls while I was at a needlework circle on Saturday. It was a lot more portable than the floor stand I'm using for the cross-stitching. I've knit a few rows of my miser's purse too.

lazy Sunday

I've enjoyed a marvelously lazy Sunday. I puttered and cleaned the kitchen this morning, made apple sauce and a chocolate cake. Then Rob and I vegged and watched football. I passed out with my head in his lap. The Packers won (woohoo) the Eagles won (yay I guess? Rob cares). I got out my dress for the battle of brandywine and put gussets in the underarms. I had ripped them out at Ft. Washington playing exuberant graces.

In other news I have started looking seriously for another job. Don't get me wrong I like my job, but...what I'm doing does not further my nursing skills and frankly I make half what i would most other places. And I'm tired of financially barely making it. and lately not making it :-/ Rob just hasn't been holding his end of this financial deal. So my options are push a man with a mental illness who shuts down OR find something that pays me more.  My major criteria at the moment are 1. a raise, a significant raise. Laura just took an offer elsewhere and got her salary doubled. 2. tuition assistance. The end goal is my NP. That has really solidified in my mind and I just cannot do that on my current salary. Laura gave me the contact info for her recruiter so I emailed them, and applied to a job at CHOP's specialty clinic. So I've started the poking process. Think good thoughts for me.

It's funny I was SO resistant to accepting that I needed to move on, and now that I have decided it's time I have this great NEED to move on to new challenges. I need something that pushes my nursing skills farther. I'm ready to further develop my assessment skills.

What? Real stuff?

I marked the darts on the checked dress!

The back waist might be a little too high. But better than too short, and there will be a cartridge pleated skirt underneath it. But it's finally in that looking like something phase.

And once the neckline is finished, I can start the collar. Hooray, for busy work! It's points with eyelet embroidery. Well within my skills :)

Weekend goal met!

I knit a row last night!

11 rows of green left, then 19-28 more rows depending on how many repeats of yellow I decide on, then leaves :)

Weekend goals...

Knit some.

I can do that...

And maybe mark the darts Sunday, but we're not going as far as counting that as a goal.

This is a fabulous list of period knitting books. http://bookworm1860.blogspot.com/2012/02/19th-century-knitting-sources-online.html?fref=gc&dti=176034119267057

I will look forward to poking around in it.

Today's goal was take out a chemise, petticoat, corset, and hoop. It's done, and they're patiently waiting in my closet for when I want to do the darts :)

The main seams on the checked bodice are done!

Now, I need to put the corset and hoop on to do anything. Hmm...
