Nearly every teens era gown I've seen has a lining of some sort at the shoulder. Even the ones with sheer sleeves. Either that, or the area where a strap would show through is covered with an opaque trim. You didn't waste your time - combinations are very necessary! If all else fails, you can just not put the straps over your shoulder and then tuck them into your corset. :)
