Still alive and enjoying my break from school.  I got my grades. An 'A' in the computer class and a 'B' in English. Not to bad.  I did worse then I thought I would in English, which was always one of my best subjects in school. The grammer part kicked me in the butt.
Question to anyone willing to answer, and who went to college, on my friends list. What was your GPA? I have had a few professors tell me that I shouldn't expect an A out of the class(es). The whole thing about I am in college now and the work is college level blah blah blah. So for those who have already gone or are going, should I really not expect an 'A' from my classes? I seriously feel bad if I get a 'B' on papers but I don't want to  be setting myself up for failure.
Okay away from college talk. I am on break and I want to enjoy it. I have been cleaning bits and pieces of my house everyday. I like it better that way, doesn't wipe me out as much. I am also cross stitching away on the Chrismas ornaments that I am making for presents. I have the toddler's chemise done except for the sleeves and bottom hem. I will start on the over dress tomorrow. All I have left to do on the hubby's costume is to distress the thing. Which I will be doing tomorrow also.  I promise to have pics up tomorrow!

The profs that told you that, are, unfortunately, quite right. Not saying you shold think A's are impossible, because they're not, and I definitely still try for them, and even get them some semesters (yay Brit Lit last semester!), but they're not as common as I'd like! My GPA's actually hovering around a 3.1 right now because I got a C in math first semester last year. I've never gotten lower than that (actually that's the only C I've gotten...so far!).

So, yeah, my *point* is that college is hard, and while I'd love A's, sometimes I have to be satisfied with less than that. :)

Thanks for answering. I believe my GPA is about a 3.1-3.2 right now. I am not sure how the 1sh classes compare to the 3sh classes in the whole GPA figuring. I messed up my very first class with this school two years ago and got a 'C'. I had an 'A' in the class but the final research paper we were to turn in was lost in the move. I thought I was being super smart and saved it on a disk... but didn't save it on the computer.... and the disk was lost. I think I might retake that class. It is seriously hurting me, IMHO, and it was pure stupidity that I got a C not because I didn't understand the material or it was a challenge like the classes I have gotten a 'B' in, (Japanese and English).

If possible, I would look ahead to programs that you hope to enter later on. Some programs require a certain GPA before you get accepted or you could be conditionally accepted and you might have to do extra work or get your GPA up higher before you are accepted completely. It also depends on how competitive it is to get into that program. If it's really competitive, meeting the minimum requirements is not going to be enough.

The only time grades matter is for getting into grad school (or other school related programs) and the first job after school. 3.0 is more than good enough for a job and normally I think it's more than good enough for grad school but it depends on your program of choice.

In general though, it is true. You will not get As nearly as often as in high school. College is much harder. I was absolutely crushed in high school when I got an A- and broke my 4.0 GPA. First semester in college I got a B and was beyond crushed. By the time I was getting a D in one class, I wasn't okay with it but not crushed. BTW, history of economics taught by a visiting prof with an accent so thick you can't tell he's speaking English when you're a theatre major and couldn't care less about economics, SUCKS! Who cares what your advisor says, quit while you're ahead and before that D becomes part of your permanent transcript.

As for actual GPA, I was going for summa cum laude but barely missed it and ended with magna cum laude. That's all I remember, it was too long ago. *sniff sniff* Now I feel old...

I do need to look ahead. I want to get into medical school... Chris and my parents keep telling me not to worry about it. A 'C' doctor is still a doctor. I on the other hand am not as thrilled by this. I looked up the Cum laude and magna cum laude and summa cum laude. WOW you had to gotten mostly 'A's. If you just barely missed it you just barely missed a 3.8. I am definatly not digging my 3.1 right now.

3.1 is great! I didn't mean to make it sound otherwise. I was just trying to say that you shouldn't expect not to get As just because it's harder. That's like saying don't expect to make a wearable corset your first try because it's harder than sewing other things. You already showed that that isn't true. But it is true that in some classes that A just isn't going to happen no matter how hard you work for it. Don't feel bad about Bs because a B is a great grade but if you expect not to get an A, then you prolly won't get the A. It's a mind game. Any prof who tells you not to expect As, is either a bad prof or one who thinks that it will inspire you to work harder and get that A.

No it wasn't just what you said... in fact it had very little to do with that. I was in awe of your grades but it didn't make me feel bad. What made me feel bad was when I looked up a few school around San Diego, one of the Med ones average GPA of applicants who were accepted was a 3.71.... I need to work ALOT harder at this point to get my GPA up. My English professor told us that he didn't give A's. A's meant excellant work with absolutely no mistakes. He did give a few out I know I saw them but I didn't get any of them. My Psych teacher said the same thing. I don't expect to get A's but I am trying very hard to get them. I see it as a challenge.

Oh, well that's different. =) GPA is only one part of getting into med school. At least if getting into med school is like getting in theatre grad school... Okay, it's prolly much different but there are prolly some similarities. Most likely you will have to take a GRE or some such test, write at least one essay, and have good recommendations. Interview and/or school visit will also work in your favor. I know someone who was getting around 2.5 and got into law school because she impressed them so much with everything else.

Also, if you need help with papers, let me know. I can at least proofread and might be able to help structurally if I can remember back that far. I even still have my English book. And that's when I hope the rules haven't changed...
