I did a quick sum up of Costume College on my blog. Its mostly about what I wore, which in no way sums up Costume College. So this post will hopefully fill in the blanks. Even though I tried to take more pictures this year, I still missed lots of fabulous costumers.
By the time we got down to the pool party I think people had already started to leave. I think the costume that stands out the most for me was [livejournal.com profile] bauhausfrau 's Effie Trinket. She swears the shoes weren't that bad, but they hurt me just looking at them. Which of course makes her fabulous for wearing them! There were others like the 18th century Effie, [livejournal.com profile] the_aristocat's beautiful gown, [livejournal.com profile] koshka_the_cat's angry bird dress, (I saw it last year but it still makes me giddy) and [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb and [livejournal.com profile] girliegirl32786's nod to Sherlock. But I have no pictures!!!!
The next morning I had to take an hour or so to myself so I missed Kendra class. It was a combination of overtaxing myself the day before, (so in hindsight waking up at 6 am taking a Final, driving down to Woodland Hills then the Fabric district and back to Woodland Hills was a dumb idea,) not enough sleep, (I was stressing because it was the first time I had roomed with my roomates. Stupid reason to be stressing but I was,) not knowing where anything was, (I hadn't unpacked and organized anything yet) and anxiety over teaching for the first time. I had a minor cry, organized all my things, got dressed very SLOWLY and fixed a gathering problem on my Gala dress. After that and a pep talk from my husband, I was ready to face the world.

I was still nervous for my class but that's a given if you know me. It didn't go exactly as I had planned. I missed a few slides, finishing the button took longer then I had predicted so I felt like I was up there looking stupid for far to long, and I ended the class with tons of time to spare. Even with that said I got a lot of positive feedback and have plans to make the class even better.  If you took my class I would love to hear feedback, good or bad as long as its constructive.
Laurie Tavan
Laurie Tavan took this picture during my class and I just adore it!
I was going to wear my Captain America but my partner in crime wasn't able to get her costume completed AND with the heat I knew if I took my costume off I wouldn't put another on. [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb and [livejournal.com profile] jennylafleur helped me accessorize my wig so I felt 18th c decadent.

I didn't get a lot of pictures from the night because I ended up sitting most of the evening. I made the mistake of wearing new shoes to an interview on Tuesday which gave me lots of blisters.I was feeling each one of them by that evening. I did get pictures of  the Game of Thrones group.

and [livejournal.com profile] the_aristocat's gorgeous Bustle gown.

A hightlight of the evening was going across the street to PF Chang's for dinner. It was nice to just gab with friends.
The heat got to me Friday so I decided not to wear a costume Saturday. The one I had planned was much to heavy and I didn't want to sit on the sidelines at the Gala like I did during the ice cream social.
Again I didn't get enough pictures. The majority of the ones I did get were drunken dancing pictures, which I'll leave it to the people dancing to share if they want to.
One of my favorite costumes of the evening was [livejournal.com profile] love3angle's  Bete costume. I talked to her, gushed over how awesome it was but didn't take a picture, how?!?!?!?!
I almost did the same thing with [livejournal.com profile] nuranar. Gushed over the perfect precision of her beading, admired her gorgeousness, but let her get away without a picture. Thankfully I was able to find her again and got a few with her.

A few more favorites from the night were all the other Robe de Styles, Carly's Frozen costume, a clever 60's dandelion, Kendra and her posse with their giant wigs, and the [livejournal.com profile] the_aristocat's dress. I got a picture of the last one but it doesn't do the embroidery on the dress any justice.
Sunday I woke up feeling tons better then the previous day so I went ahead and wore the Victorian Explorer I had planned for Saturday. The only hitch was my ankles were at full blown swollen stage so I wasn't able to button my boots up.

If you saw me sitting most the time it was because of that.

These two completely inspired me. I normally shy away from Regency styles, I think they look better on a smaller frame, but I adore these. If I make a Regency dress it will have to be a riding habit.
All of my limited classes were scheduled for Sunday. The Mechanical Wings class was cancelled but I enjoyed the other two I had. I learned to make kanzashi flowers and a few new pressing tricks.
Over the weekend Sara shared her love of Selfies and I think it should become a costuming 'thing.' Some of my favorite pictures from the weekend were the selfies.

I think I have already posted this but in case I haven't what photos I did get are on my Flickr.

Costume college and gala are paid for. Yea!!! The room is the biggest cost hurdle but it feels nice to have those paid for and out of the way. I also ordered some fancy coutil, found half price on etsy, and some swatches of silk crepe de chine. I am grateful I only need 2-3 yards of both of those.

I have a few questions I would love feedback on. I am debating on teaching at Costume College next year. I don't want to offer something no one is interested in. I would also like to do it as anxiety free as possible.

For anyone who's attends Costume College would you be interested in a how to make leek buttons class. I know how and Can show how to make the death head and checkerboard right now. If I go ahead with it I wouldn't be opposed to learning more.

To anyone who has taught. Is it an easy process? How was the experience, the good and the bad? Did you have problems with people being snarky? Do you choose if your class is limited or not? Any pros or cons for limited vs unlimited?
Those are the only questions I can think of... Like I said any feedback is highly appreciated and feel free to pm me if you don't want to make something public.

but I still want to do it! My CoCo sum up.

I had a fabulous time at Costume College this year.  Even a whole month later it is still brings a stupid smile to my face. Even with the stress of an impending TDY, horribly swollen ankles, and a near gala melt down, I can still say Fabulous time. I think it shows in just my anxiety levels. Last year I had a full out anxiety attack that my hubby had to talk me out of and I was near one several times. This year there were two times that I got to the stage of shaky, escalated heart rate, and tearing up/crying. The first one was Wednesday night. I couldn't figure out why but I knew the signs so I called my hubby. That man knows me to well... He told me,  that I was probably just getting overwhelmed. I had spent most the day traveling, 3 hours of which were on the 405 in construction traffic. After a good nights sleep I would be fine. And he was right. We even drove around the next day and I didn't have any problems at all.
Thursday we went.... )

I didn't get my recap or costume posts written but I was able to upload and go through all my CoCo pics. I deleted any obviously bad ones but if there are any more that you would like me to take down just let me know. I will gladly make it disappear.
If its a picture of you feel free to take and use where ever you want to.

Its been a little while again. Mostly because of how busy work has been keeping me. A little because I didn't want to post another "I am angry/sad with the world post."
Sum up is I won't be going to WIlliamsburg this year. :(  When I started searching for flights I discovered I would pretty much lose a whole day going there due to flight time and losing a few hours with the time difference. I wasn't able to extend my vacation a day earlier or later so that put me on the fence. Airfare and hotel costs were kind of high for such a short trip. Then work pushed back the day we will switch shifts. So I would have to work my shift and catch a slightly later flight, (which would mean the WHOLE day is shot) with no sleep in between. Plus if the shift change was earlier like it had been planned I would use to days again. Events aren't as fun when your body thinks its time to go to bed.
I was already having some anxiety about going somewhere I have never been, across country by myself. Now add to it no sleep.... I decided the stress would outweigh the fun. At first I was SUPER grumbly about it. But now I feel a bit better. I have more money and time to work on stuff for Costume College. :)
WHICH is LESS then 3 months away now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which wouldn't be to bad if we didn't have a sudden influx of inmates! What is the Warden thinking?!?!?! Doesn't she know I have sewing to do? I can't be working all sorts of overtime!
Like last year I am working from the skin out. I been plugging away at a 18c chemise/shift this weekend between naps and errands. I hope to have it finished before tomorrow morning. It will just depend on how much sleep my body thinks it needs between now and then. After that I will start on my corset.
And so this post has some pictures in it I will include a commission I finished up at the end of April. I am really proud of it.
The customer was doing a burlesque type photo shot and wanted a little 'bustle' to cover her butt and hips. It has white satin with black lace over it, just like her corset. I also added piping I made out of a red/black shot silk, for a pop of color and to help it cordinate with her shoes that were red with a black lace overlay. I added the trim on by hand so you wouldn't have any stitches going through the lace. Once I found my groove that part actually went pretty fast.

I was curious if anyone is looking for a roomate. I plan on staying Thursday-Sunday night, maybe Monday.
I am also planning on having access to my car, so instead of going on the tour Monday I am going to drive myself, anyone want to join me? Don't even have to pay gas because I am going anyways. I would just prefer to have others in the car/navigators when I go down there. Can fit 3-4 others in my car (depends how comfy you want to get.)

CoCo sum up

I'll have to start out by saying this was probably a close second for Best Costume College yet.
Onward to pictures and stuff )

I know I said I would post daily and that as slid to the wayside. Sorry....
I had 4 days off and I was hoping in that time to finish up my bathing suit in the first two days and the last 2 days I would get tons done on the Gala gown. That way I could just be doing finishing touches this week because I work. Its not working quite that way... I finished the bathing suit up on day four and have my first mock up for the Gala gown done but not sewn together.
Though I must say I am pretty dang happy with the bathing suit. I took 6 inches off the length of the bloomers and the proportions are MUCH better now. I also redid the bottom of the collar and redid how I attached the pleats to the bottom of the bloomers so I over all just like it now. YEA!
So this is my tentative line up
Thursday:
Day: Victorian bathing suit.
Pool Party: Either keep the bathing suit on or my Beach Pajamas
Friday:
Day: Civies, I have class all day
Ice cream social: Sleeping Beauty
Saturday:
Day: New Steampunk
Gala: 19teens evening gown
Sunday:
Sunday Undies: My Edwardian undies
Pool Party: Which ever one I didn't wear on Thursday.
If it is italics then it has something that needs to be done to it. Even if its as simple as a hook and eye, but it is wearable! Underlined means I am screwed if I don't get to it. This is the first CoCo that I will actually have a few days that I will be wearing more than one costume!
llyrafantasyfae: (Little Man)

Hotel is booked! Now I just need to make stuff to wear.

I have decided I have to sew or do SOMETHING costume related everyday till costume college otherwise I won't get everything I want to get done, done. To help me stay accountable I will also post here everyday. So if you don't see a post. Yell at me!
For today I sewed in the hook side of the busk and the waist tape. It's not a whole lot but that's why I have to do a little something everyday even if its a workday.

Today was a fairly decent mail day. I got my Astorias.... I don't care for the fit though. I think I am going to send them back and get a half size bigger. They are cute! I need to get stockings.... My tattoo clashes with them.  Does anyone know a good site for Edwardian appropriate stockings?
I also got my class info for Costume College. I got into two of the classes I wanted. The Victorian corset class and Bead, Bullion and Pearls class. I am also going on the fabric tour. All that's left is booking the room. Which I will be doing tomorrow before [livejournal.com profile] theladyrebecca beats me. I had to wait to see if I was coming down Wednesday night or Thursday  and if my days off were approved. They were!!!! I get 10 days off and only had to take 6.

I just got to my email from this morning. I didn't get a scholarship for Costume College this year. I am really kind of bummed. I know it will wear off and I will come up with plan B but for now I want to curl up with a kitty and listen to him purr/tell me how much he loves me.
llyrafantasyfae: (Default)
I decided to take the plunge and apply for the Costume College Scholarship. I have to pick 3-5 of my best work... So I wanted to ask my LJ friends which of my costumes you all like best.
llyrafantasyfae: (Default)
Will try to finish this up before work.
I didn't have enough to wear one thing during the day and one thing at night so I just wore the Steampunk the whole day. I am very happy with that costume. Its at last completely done, except maybe a few accessories.

I took a few classes that morning. Then I went and parked myself in the sewing retreat in attempts to finally get my sleeves in. Those things were just plain evil!!!! I tore the one out 3 times and broke my needle and had to ask the other gals if they had one. BUT while there I caught two learning circles I really enjoyed. Bess' cut lace and [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb and [livejournal.com profile] girliegirl32786  class.
It was about half way into Bess' class that the headache and dizziness started. Which I feel so dumb about. I should of known better. As you can see in the above pics I was crazily overheated yet I still didn't eat or drink anything all day. When I got back to the room I joined my roommates who were going to dinner and then the ice cream social.  I enjoyed standing off to the side and just watching all the costumes go by. I retired early, because  I was determined to finish putting in the hanging sleeves. Headache only got worse and by the time I finally went to sleep it had graduated into a migrane complete with auras. Needless to say it was night two of little to no sleep.
Saturday morning I woke up, still had headache but its edge was gone. But I had the added benefit of having a stuffy nose and sore throat. I was able to finish up the last three inches or so of the hanging sleeve, YEA! and got dressed in my 50's dress. I also did my hair in a retro style. As long as it doesn't involve curls I kind of have an idea of what I am doing. No pictures of that but its really not that exciting.
I had my partlets and gollars limited class that morning. Not what I thought it was going to be... but I will have an extra costume piece for my Ren faire garb if I ever hit up a faire that is cold. Afterwards it was back to the sewing room. Where I finished up the each pjs. Thankfully those were super easy.
Then back to the room to SLOWLY get dressed for the gala.

Yes my head has been cut off on purpose. See rosy cheeks in first pics. Times that by about 10. It was way to warm in that room. Or this gown is really heavy... or I was sick... or all of the above. But one thing I did forget to pack was make up. I have seen other pics of this outfit that are tons better that I will see if I can get from their owners and add them later. I had the 3 foot rule in effect with this gown though. Still a lot I have and want to get done still. But I had a great sense of accomplishment. This is the third thing on my list from when I started sewing that I wanted to make one day. Its about 5 years in the planning process and at last it is getting done. I can finally see what I was envisioning and that is just mind boggling.
I did enjoy a nice dinner but the headache was starting to peak again so I only mingled a short while after dinner. I wanted to be sociable so bad too. I got to see [livejournal.com profile] jenthompson 's fancy dress. I WANT ONE! [livejournal.com profile] koshka_the_cat  and [livejournal.com profile] girliegirl32786 's evening spotty gowns, [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb  EPIC pink ball gown, and a hundred other just awesome creations. I wish my camera battery didn't decide then was a good time to die. Shortly after though it was off to bed for me.

Sunday I woke up and just wanted to go home. But I forced myself to stay for a few classes. I am glad I did! I took Trystan's Elisabethean hair class. I can't wait to try out what she taught. She made it soooo simple too. After that class though I called hubby and asked him to pick me up so we could go home.
.
I wore my Beach Pajamas. They were sooo comfy.
And that was my costume collge. I am excited for next year!  I will show my loot later its time to get ready for work.
llyrafantasyfae: (Default)
The main one I am sure is just my insecurities. I didn't get anything done so all I as wearing was my steampunk and kirtle. Everyone else was in their 'pretty pretty princess' dresses. So I kept catching people pointing and laughing, not that i have EVER had that happen there before, but in my dream it was just like one of the worst high school movies you can think of. Nobody would talk to me, and none of the classes were interesting to me so I spent a lot of time alone in the room. Ugh! that is so disheartening. Maybe working on my loose gown will make me feel better... hopefully.
llyrafantasyfae: (Default)
I have been trying to write this post without sounding like a complete depressed bump on the log.  I got my limited classes back. I am a little disappointed.  I am wait listed for the class I really wanted to take. I guess if I don't get into the class I will just have to figure it out myself but  I was really hoping to learn from someone.  I did get the partlet class. Thats good! (<--- see trying to be positive.)
llyrafantasyfae: (Default)
I sent my registration in. I finally decided against going to the fabric district this year. There were pros and cons but it came down basicially to these: I don't live that far away to go down by myself. I have no near future projects that I need to get fabric for. And it would be one night less to pay for at the hotel.
On that note. Does anyone need or know someone who needs a roommate?? Sharing is cheaper, Cheaper is better.
