I decided I want to finally take the plunge into 18c costuming. I have two new silks that I think would look fabulous as 18c. Well to do that I need to make the underpinnings first. Then it dawns on me. I have no clue what shape the 18c corset is trying to achieve. I know pretty much all the others... but no clue what the silhoette is for 18 century. Is it still conical like a Renaissance corset? And my google fail has failed me to figure out this question. I put in 18 c corset into my search field and I get tons of burlesque type pictures and  corset piercings.

What you are looking for is 18th Century Stays, not a corset. The term corset didn't come around until the 1820's, I think. It should help with the search terms. :-)

The 18th C silhouette is rounder than the 16th C. Whereas the Elizabethan bodice is meant to flatten and pull into a triangular shape, the 18th C was more about rounding out the figure. The way each are boned (channels) is different and they are different in cut.

Hope that helps!

It does help! Thank you! I have found patterns in my books, I got off the Internet and started looking in those. But I still couldn't figure out what was the ideal shape they were going for exactly.

This blog is kind of small and hasn't been updated in a year, but it has some very good information: http://18thcstays.blogspot.com/

This site is also really useful: http://larsdatter.com/18c/stays.html

Thanks for the links! I found the second one when I finally put in stays instead of corset. But going over the first one now.

WOOO 18th century! Isabella's got it right, still a generally conical shape but round.

And have you decided what kind of dresses to make from your silks? I want a picture of them! :D

I think I want to start with a polonaise jacket. But first is the underthings. :)

Nice. A polonaise is one thing I've not yet made. Eventually! They're pretty though, and not everyone seems to have made one yet.

And psh, what's the fun in being logical about putting together an outfit? ;) Gotta keep the fun silk in mind while you're sewing the mind-numbingly boring shift! (Or maybe that's just me, lol.)
